The tree leaves blocked the sign at the temple - it actually reads "Yun Lin Monastery". Legend has it that when Emperor Kang Xi visited, he was asked by the abbot to write the temple name "Ling Yin Monastery" but as Kang Xi was tipsy, he wrote the "rain" for the top part of the "ling" out of proportion and his follower hinted to him to change it to "yun". When he was done, the baffled abbot asked why the temple name was changed. So, Kang Xi cooked up a story that the place looks covered with clouds (because of the smoke produced by the large number of joss sticks offerings by the devotees - it's like a heavenly fairyland) and from the Heavens, the number of joss sticks looked like trees "Lin". Thus, the name. The poor abbot had nothing to say and the temple had to carry the erroneous name till another "emperor" Jiang Zemin wrote the correct name (which was hung at the entrance). Posted by Picasa
